Gorgeous photo by Richard Avedon of the model Dovima, wearing what is, according to Hamish Bowles, one of Yves Saint Laurent’s first autonomous designs for the house of Dior. Hear Bowles, Pierre Berge and others speak about the legacy of YSL here.
- The Look – Scenting the Money, Yves Saint Laurent, Runway, Uniform and Function, Material World, Power of the Press - this is the best find. Six fine-grained documentaries, covering the fashion industry from various angles, made in 1992. An artifact of the recent past before the advent of the internet, showing the dramatic differences 20 years can make.
- Brian Duffy: The Man who Shot the Sixties – a profile of another cockney photographer – not David Bailey – whose legacy was lost because he was so contrary.
- WTForever 21 is Back and Blogging – I love this story! People who say that fashion bloggers are always kowtowing to the demands of big brands need to check it.
- The New York gang that only wears Ralph Lauren – and not just any Ralph Lauren. Amazing to see such a classic brand being worn in such an over-the-top way.
- The Bumbys Will Judge Your Personal Appearance – fashion police as performance art.
- Several Sizes Too Small – the New York Times talks superficially about fashion’s obsession with youth, and the emergence of fashion blogger “stage moms”. The conversation contrasts with this one on my post.
- Femme Guilt and Women Slut Shaming Women OR Don’t Dress Too Slutty if You Want To Make Friends! – Rachel talks about something I’ve been pondering ever since this post, and I threw in a few cents worth of opinion too.
- On Fake Glasses in Japan – so interested in the phenomenon of stillborn trends – this post talks about why some trends work in Asia but not in the west. On the flip side, Why the Neo-Trad Trend Failed to Catch on in Japan. In both cases, it’s interesting to see that just because the media pushes it, doesn’t mean that the public will accept it.

The Lo Life link is really interesting — it shows the importance of brands as symbols that cultural narratives can be built around, often in unintended ways. The brand has a currency of its own, a life of its own and its meaning can be reworked for whoever wants it. Reminiscent of Chav culture.

That was such an interesting post. I always knew of these photos but I never knew that it was one of YSL’s first designs for Dior (and i LOVE YSL. I read his biography and fell in love with a man i’ll never meet)
