Have you considered using gouache like a watercolor? I much prefer it over actual watercolors. Cleaner, purer, behaves better. I know you hate gouache, but I also hate it used opaque. Watered down, I like it a lot. And I like a big brush with a very good sharp point.
Thanks for the tips VC… I do have some quality gouache in primary colours on hand. I will dip in.

How did you acheive those denim lines?
