Project Runway Canada 2 – Episode 3 Redux

Project Runway Canada 2

I am posting my thoughts on each episode of my favourite show, Project Runway Canada, in case you are watching too and want to discuss it.  More after the gap —

This was another week to get rid of filler.  Crying Christie, this season’s Meghan, had to go.  Thank goodness.  I don’t know about you, but as a reality television watcher, I don’t get the jazz with tears and ambulances.  They really are not fun to watch.  I would rather watch an over-inflated ego than an insecure one and I would rather watch a designer struggle with their design than with their health.

It was the first team challenge.  Every choice Christie made went awry, from selecting Jason as a partner (he had immunity) to creating a design that was somehow both timid and overly conceptual.  If you are bad at making choices under pressure, fashion designer probably is not the career for you – never mind reality television contestant.  In the last episode she said “I just want to go home” so it seemed that her effort this episode was successful self sabotage.

“Rise like the phoenix” was the best line of the episode.  Brian‘s booming voice echoes down the hall as Christie scuttles off.  Good advice, if somewhat highfalutin’, but it never got under that hipster headband.

Of the rest of the teams, Sunny & Baylor and Kim & Genevieve were the two major contenders in my opinion.  Sunny’s dress was original and confident, and while Baylor’s daywear was in the realm of weird, they are both total pros in terms of execution and their looks matched the brief well.  It is a lot of fun to see two designers who work well together.  At last, Sunny gets a win!

I was disappointed when Kim & Genevieve were not kept on the runway at the end.  I truly thought that of all the teams, their effort was the most even – the looks went together and were both interesting designs, though perhaps they lacked the showstopper quality of Sunny and Baylor’s.

Jeff made the same mistake he did in the last episode.  I thought he could learn – but maybe he is just too entrenched in his ways to change.  Once again, the dress was a subtle, too-conservative colour and the design was inappropriate for the amount of time he had to execute it.  I worry that he has nothing exciting to contribute and is the kind of designer who spends weeks in his atelier creating too-tasteful designs like fine wine but can’t mix an exciting new cocktail quick enough to compete.  I think that he will be the next one who doesn’t measure up.

Did you watch the episode?  What did you think?

    1. When Kim’s model turned around on the runway and began walking back upstage she looked like one of those fancy chickens with all the plumes on her rear end. As I mentioned in my own recap, Kim needs to learn how to edit.

I also thought that Baylor’s outfit was weird, but mostly because the tulle seemed to emanate from a very odd place on the model’s bustline. I’m never a fan of “LOOK AT ME” ornamentation on boobs, unless it’s one of those T-shirts with two fried egg decals ironed on strategically. Now those are classy.

    2. If you like fried egg decals you might like Amie Scott (third picture) – http://www.amiescott.com/shootnov7.html

    3. I’m so glad Christie went home. I looked at her online portfolio: http://www.carnylove.com and her designs are stuff you’d see made by Shrinkle (http://www.shrinkle.net) 2003-2004…which is not “high fashion”. It’s like, stuff you’d see sold at Bluenotes or Stitches or something like that… I have my money on Brandon to win, no matter how inflated of an ego he has. He has talent. 4. That dress of Brandon’s with the cut-out on the boobs makes me hate him even more. I’m still not feeling the love.

Jessica and Sunny for the top two!

    5. Gotta agree with Auntie on the top two picks. Go Sunny and Jessica!

Christie and Brandon’s designs definitely have a market but just are not for me, personally.
