the last collection
In my final year at school the big project was to create a complete five outfit collection. We did everything, design, illustration, drafting, muslins, patterns, samples, market research, presentation…
My collection was called Final Fashion – the last collection.

This is my inspiration board. I was inspired by Vionnet’s genius with drape and cut, decay and damage like McQueen’s shipwreck dress, and the easy versatility of Claire McCardell’s monastic dress. I’m really into post-civilization speculative fantasy so I selected a palette of neutrals suggesting deserts and nomads. The fabrics were light, textured cottons, jerseys and leather for the accessories.
The full online collection of visual paraphenalia of this collection can be seen here. I also created my first blog to document the story of the last collection, so if you’re interested you can read the long story here.
After much reiteration, many versions of muslins and many adjustments to the illustrations, this is my final set of illustrations…

…and my line summary…

…and the final product…

The collection featured garments which fit flexibly, either wrapping and tying, volumes that were cinched, or lacing allowing the garments to be adjusted to a variety of figures and proportions. Loops and laces could be played with to create multiple looks within single garments. Everything is easy to care for and easy to mix up. These are garments that give you permission to play in front of the mirror, to experiment and play with how they may be worn.
The graduate fashion show can be seen here, mine is collection number five.
It was an incredibly huge project which absorbed me for months and months, and it’s still too soon for me to be able to have some perspective on it or to say definitively if Final Fashion has a future in the real world. It’s enough to say that the last collection was really just the beginning…

I love your collection. I can’t draw to save my life and so never went into design, but I love clothes and fashion. The stuff you have looks very wearable, comfy, feminine but also has an edge to it. Gorgeous!
Wow!!! I love your collection. Can definitely see that you will make it one day soon.
That’s amazing! Your collection is so beautiful! I’m just starting to study fashion, and I can already see that you have more talent than some of my teachers!!!

[...] Even though I am not a designer, sometimes I am seized with a desire to make a dress. Even if I have better things to do, I’ll find myself feverishly drafting, cutting and sewing to make my idea in the cloth. This was one of those dresses. I shamelessly imitated the bodice of the Butikofer dress I love, but redesigned the skirt to suit some oatmeal crinkle cotton I had on hand, left over from my grad collection. [...]
